
Conformal Coating

A layer of protection against the elements
Exascend’s conformal coating is a rugged technology that protects the entire Exascend SSD against environmental threats by applying a water and particle-resistant coating to the printed circuit board (PCB) and all embedded components. The result is a dramatically decreased likelihood that exposure to contaminants and moisture will have any influence on the SSD’s operation or functionality.
Conformal coating is a particularly popular option among Exascend’s customers in sectors such as mission critical, industrial automation, edge computing and transportation. In these sectors, contaminants are common and the potential effects of a storage device failure can be critical, making conformal coating a welcome extra layer of protection.
The material used in Exascend’s conformal coating is a urethane-based and chemically-resistant compound that is purpose-designed for PCBs and with a flawless track record in SSDs. Moreover, the conformal coating compound is qualified for the United States Military Standard MIL-I-46058C specification for conformal coatings and is RoHS-compliant.
Exascend uses an automated process when applying conformal coatings to guarantee that an even layer with the desired thickness of the compound is applied to the entire SSD (except the connectors). Once the coating has been applied, the conformal coating compound is cured using specialized equipment before validating the quality and thickness of the coating with UV light and a thickness gauge. The final product has a visible shinier appearance on account of the reflective qualities of the coating and is ready for final deployment in a customer’s demanding application.
